If water is sitting in your yard instead of soaking in, or certain patches stay wet long after rain, you've got a drainage problem that won't fix itself. Soggy spots kill grass, create mosquito breeding grounds, and can damage your home's foundation if water pools near the house. The good news is that most pooling issues come from one of a few fixable causes, and knowing which one you have is the first step to getting your yard back to normal.
Standing Water Usually Means Grading or Drainage Issues
The most common reason water pools is simple: the ground slopes the wrong way or doesn't slope at all. In Spring, our clay-heavy soil doesn't absorb water as quickly as sandy soil in other parts of Texas. When rain falls on flat ground or ground that slopes toward your house, water has nowhere to go. You can check your yard's slope by looking at which direction water runs after a heavy rain. If it moves toward your foundation or collects in low spots, you need to either regrade that area or install a drainage solution to move water away.
Sometimes the problem isn't the yard itself but what's underneath it. Compacted soil from construction, foot traffic, or heavy equipment can create a hardpan layer that blocks water from draining down. If you've had recent work done on your property, this could be the culprit.
Clogged or Failing Drain Lines
If you already have a drainage system installed, pooling water might mean it's not working. Drain lines can get clogged with roots, sediment, or debris. A yard drain that worked fine five years ago might be backing up now because a tree root has invaded the line. In the Spring area, where we get heavy rain in spring and summer, a slow drain becomes a problem fast.
The fix depends on what's wrong. A simple clog might need jetting or snaking. If the line is damaged or has roots throughout it, you may need to replace that section. Before you invest in a new system, have the existing one inspected. We can run a camera through your drain line to see exactly where the problem is, which saves you from guessing and digging in the wrong spot.
Irrigation System Runoff or Overwatering
Sometimes the pooling isn't from rain at all. If you have a sprinkler system, it might be causing the problem. Overwatering, poor sprinkler placement, or misaligned heads can send water to the same spot every time you run the system. This is especially common in yards where the original system wasn't designed for the current landscape. If you added trees or a shed, the water pattern may no longer match where it should go.
Check your sprinkler coverage by turning the system on and watching where water actually lands. Heads that spray into hardscape, toward your house, or onto the same patch of grass need adjustment. Sometimes it's just a head rotation or repositioning. Other times you need to add or remove zones to match your current yard layout.
French Drains and Dry Wells
If regrading isn't practical, a French drain can solve pooling in low-lying areas. A French drain is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe that collects water and moves it away from problem spots. It's not expensive compared to major excavation, and it works well in Spring's clay soil because it gives water a path it wouldn't naturally take.
A dry well works similarly but is more compact. It's a buried basin that collects water from a downspout or low spot, then lets it percolate slowly into the ground. Both solutions are permanent and require no maintenance once installed.
When to Call a Professional
You can handle simple fixes yourself. Clearing debris from existing drains, adjusting sprinkler heads, or filling a low spot with topsoil are doable jobs. But if water is pooling near your foundation, if you suspect a broken drain line, or if the problem is widespread across your yard, you need someone to assess it properly.
A drainage professional can evaluate your yard's slope, soil type, and water flow to recommend the right solution. In Spring, where soil composition and seasonal rainfall patterns matter, getting this right the first time saves money and headaches later.
Get It Fixed Before Next Season
Soggy yards only get worse. Every rain adds to the problem, and standing water weakens grass, invites pests, and can lead to foundation issues. The time to address it is now, before our heavy spring rains arrive.
